Thinking about care

We are a group of people who think about care. We are researchers, writers, activists, policy analysists, parents, partners, children, and friends.  We give and receive care every day. We are also cultural and institutional analysts who focus on the factors that affect people’s capacity and willingness to care for each other. We pay particularly close attention to social inequality, to work, consumption and insecurity, to dependency and need, and to the linkages between “private troubles and public issues.”

But how do we do this in academic arenas when we do not have a popular nor academic language that captures the essence if care? The language we use still is logically organized by economic or public discourses (dare I say masculinist foundations). We have still not shifted the value system…caregivers are still workers and care recipients are still passive dependents and caregiving is still feminized without valuing the essence of caring.

  3. Allison Pugh Says:

Lynet, you outline the challenges well! And there is the question of whether you can ever dismantle the value system from within. Still it is important to keep talking about it, so that when the culture is moveable we can move it in the right direction…

Hi, I recently came across your blog through the mothers centers newsletter. In late 2010 I graduated from the Australian National University on a topic that is centrally related to your site. My thesis was called: Maternal Ambivalence in contemporary Australia: navigating equity and care. The data from 16 in-depth and semi-structured interviews with contemporary women-as-mothers was framed with the work of Martha Fineman in the Autonomy Myth, and Eva Kittay’s work on ‘dependency theory’ in Loves Labour and more. And chapter six talks about the work on care by Nancy Fraser, Anne Orloff amongst others who emphasise a need for transformational change. My thesis is available online and you can find it through a google search. I’d be available to do a guest post if you were interested.

      Thanks, Joan G
